What is a Practicum?
A practicum is an opportunity for graduate-level public health students at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH) to apply public health competencies in a real-world setting. A practicum is planned, supervised, evaluated, and carried out within a public health context. A practicum is coordinated between a preceptor in the field (a public health professional located at a community-based organization, local health department, non-profit, government agency, etc.), JHSPH, and a student. The practicum meets the needs of the participating organization or agency, while the student learns to apply public health skills and competencies. A practicum must have realistic expectations and objectives that can be delivered within a specific amount of time (typically on a part-time basis), and must focus on at least one of the core competencies for the public health workforce
(MPH Practicum Learning Objectives). JHSPH will work with preceptors to determine if a particular practicum opportunity is appropriate. Questions may be directed to
